"Men Behind the Sun" is a movie I think everyone should see...despite the horrible stuff.

"Men Behind the Sun" is based on an actual event in WWII. The Japanese had occupied most of China, and in the Manchuria region, they built a compound known as Unit 731. They were testing biological and chemical weapons...on human prisioners. They were mostly Chinese, but some American POWs were reportedly taken. Some of the experiments seemed to just be done for shits and giggles. For example, there is a scene where they did a "cold weather test", which they froze this woman's hands by dumping ice water while outside in -37 degrees for 12 hours, then brought her back in and dipped them in warmer water. The lab director makes a few taps with his ruler, then calmly peeeels off the forearm skin and she screams in horror as she can see her tissue and bone exposed.

The worst of all, was after the war ended. They destroyed the lab and took their research back to Japan, but the main lab director was captured by the Americans. BUT, the US government made an agreement with him - he would not be charged with any war crimes if he gave them his research. He did.

Not only is it a demonstration of how people can be cruel to each other for the sake of an idea, but how low can people will go to get something. The lab director himself proves a point of how "small things [bacteria] are more efficent than big things [guns]" by throwing a cat into a room swarming with rats, only to be eaten alive.
